Investing in skills

As the Building Safety Act puts increased emphasis on accountability at every stage of the construction supply chain, Acorn Aluminium continues to invest in its people with competency-led workforce training.

A year on from achieving Investors in People (IIP) status, six factory team members have recently achieved NVQ Level 3 qualifications as part of a structured programme of development, with far-reaching benefits.

Ensuring its staff members have the appropriate skills, knowledge, experience and behaviours required to consistently excel in their work, Acorn encourages the development of practical expertise.

A hands-on, visually assessed training approach strengthens competence and in turn, compliance, reinforcing the company’s commitment to safer project delivery under the Building Safety Act.

As well as personal growth opportunities and increased employee retention rates at Acorn, quality is also improved, and risk is reduced, for contractors.

“Our training model supports employee growth, boosts team morale, and reinforces client confidence,” says Acorn’s Managing Director, Paul Stevens .

“Our culture of continuous improvement and capability-building is clearly driving results on an individual and an organisational level, but it also makes us a more reliable delivery partner. The benefits are filtering through to our clients and beyond,” Paul adds.

With IIP awarded at the company’s first attempt in 2024, the aluminium window, door and curtain walling specialist is fully committed to competency-led project delivery in the commercial space.

Recognising Acorn’s investment in its teams, infrastructure and service offer, the award reflects its broader organisational governance, as well as its culture.

“Our exceptionally talented team shares our commitment to service excellence and that’s demonstrated through our IIP accreditation,” continues Paul.

“Achieving IIP was a solid foundation for our work in providing the best commercial window and door and curtain walling solutions for our customers’ projects.”

In addition to IIP, Acorn holds an extensive list of further accreditations, including Constructionline’s coveted Gold Standard.

This recognises Acorn’s commitment to minimise and manage its environmental impact; quality management; commitment to promoting equal opportunities; compliance with the Modern Slavery Act; and anti-bribery and corruption policies.

Installation teams also work in accordance with the Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) and receive specialist training to work at height from organisations including the International Powered Access Federation (IPAF) and the Prefabricated Access Suppliers’ and Manufacturers’ Association (PSAMA).

“Against the backdrop of the Building Safety Act and its key role in protecting human life, we’re continually striving to raise the bar for sub-contractor partnerships in the commercial sector,” concludes Paul.

“A fully trained and accredited workforce, with the right level of skill and competence, is key to ensure that we achieve that aim, and as a result, it remains of utmost importance to our operations, here at Acorn Aluminium.”
